Tracks & Scats

Goanna tracks on a beach.

Learning to look at the ground and read the sign you see in the form of tracks, scats and scratchings is great fun, especially with kids along.  It can help you to develop a better understanding of what is going on around you. Traditional aboriginal people had very adavanced knoweldge and skills in this area.

As you move around on walking tracks and through places or travel along unmade roads keep your eyes on the signs left behind by the wildlife.  There are also some excellent books that help with identification such as Tracks, Scats and Other Traces A field Guide to Australian Mammals by Barbara Triggs ISBN 0195536436.
