The dramatic changes in water levels and the high productivity of the floodplains means they are vitally important refuges for wildlife, especially birds.  The floodplains of the Top End are one of the most spectacular wildlife locations in the world today.

As the water levels reduce more and more wildlife moves in to take advantage of the food supply.
